How to choose the best
domain name for your business......
Choosing the correct uniform resource locator
a.k.a URL or web address is an absolutely crucial factor in
getting your site ranked in the search engines and thereby seen
by your clients.
Many of the things that make a name an asset in
the offline world are mirrored in the online game as well. But
then there there are also some crucial differences to what
constitutes a strong online name.
Branding is important both
online and offline but the offline world views your ads whereas
online clients may actually seek your ads.
In other words clients will type in a search
phrase to locate a particular good or service and therein lies
the challenge when coming up with a quality domain name.
In an ideal world your domain name would be
part of ( or even exactly ) the same as the phrase that most
people wouldd use to find you. For example, if you sold
hairdryers then the domain names- hairdryers, online hairdryers
and buy hairdryers online...will all go a long way to getting
you ranked for those phrases.
The search engines downplay this relevence as
do most seo ( search engine optimisation ) courses but if you
doubt the veracity of ahaving a strong domain keyword in your
url then just type in about 50 differing phrases into Google
and take notice of who holds the top positions.
Invariably it's businesses with the exact
keyword you just typed, inside their domain name. Now sometimes
it's because those businesses have been around the longest and
they had therefore snapped up those names but the fact remains
that the domain names are a huge factor in the search
results.
The trick lies in balancing this need to have
keywords in the url against the very real difficulty of
securing a common , pronounceable phrase in a top level domain
such as a dotcom.
So the question may arise as to which is the
better domain for a used car dealer - cheapusedcarsonline.com
versus.....usedcars.net.
One is a top level domain and therefore more
valuable and the other is a lower level domain name but one
that is shorter, very powerful and generic.
Another consideration is how descriptive the
name needs to be. It could be argued that the longer name is
more descriptive and specific ...and that is both it's strength
and weakness.
The longer phrase is known in seo land as
the long tail and it will get fewer hits or type-in
visitors....but the ones it gets will be super targeted people
wanting exactly what you are selling. For this reason you need
to ascertain whether you want to go broad or niche in what you
are offering online and then choose your domain with that in
mind.
